SKELMERSDALE PHOTOGRAPHER LANDS SPREAD IN CELEBRITY MAGAZINE
A TALENTED Lancashire Photographer from Skelmersdale, who first took up photography as a teenager when his grandad left him a camera in his will, has landed a front page splash and an impressive 11-page spread in celebrity magazine ‘Hello!’ after being hand-picked to capture world-famous classical singer Russell Watson’s wedding to Louise Harris in Spain.
Wes Simpson was recruited for a “dream assignment” after an interview with the famous tenor and his fiancee who were impressed by his ability to represent the ‘feeling’ of an occasion and capture relaxed but storytelling images.
He said: “I was asked to meet up with Russell and Louise and show them examples of previous wedding photos I had taken. “I think they chose me because they liked my ability to capture emotion – I don’t do traditional pictures. They wanted images that captured the heartbeat of the day, rather than traditional posed pictures.”
CELEBRITY WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER
The 38-year-old Lancashire photographer jetted off to Benahavis in Southern Spain for the nuptials on August 19th and was put up in a five-star hotel before being chauffeur-driven to the ceremony.
The magazine coverage was an added bonus for Wes.
“To be able to call myself a Celebrity Wedding Photographer and to have my work seen by so many people with my images printed across 11 pages of well known international magazine such as ‘Hello!,’ together with having one of my images on the front cover is a dream come true. The photographs came out really well, I intentionally used the backdrop of the Spanish landscape when creating the photos as I wanted them all to be very colourful and to compliment to location and story.”
In a world exclusive the high profile glossy celebrity magazine called Wes Simpson’s photographic work
“A FAIRYTALE WEDDING ALBUM.”
HAND-PICKED TO CAPTURE CELEBRITY WEDDING
“To photograph the UK’s biggest-selling classical artist – ‘a man who has battled back from two brain tumours’ – on one of the happiest days of his life, was an honour. I was delighted to be trusted with such a big job.”
Because of the couple’s magazine deal, though, Wes had to keep news of his assignment under his hat for a while.
He added: “I had to keep my lips closed because of the magazine deal and I only told family and friends after it was published. Some of them thought I was going into the Big Brother house because I had been so secretive!”
Wes first became interested in photography as a teenager when he was left an old Olympus camera in his grandad’s will. He used that throughout his university days at Edge Hill and his first official ‘assignment’ was coverage of the Docker’ strike in the late 1990s. After graduation, he trained as a TV cameraman with the BBC before going on to work on programmes including Brookside, Hollyoaks and Shameless.
“It’s certainly been a long road from the dockers’ strike to an 11-page spread in ‘Hello!’” concluded Wes who also featured in the Champion last year when a film he worked on was among the winners at the star-studded BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) awards night at London’s Royal Opera House.
