Nicola and Connor stated that wedding photography was extremely important to them and that I was their dream photographer. So much so, that after securing their Hurlston Hall weddings venue date, I was the first booking they made. Three years in advance!
Here is their Hurlston Hall weddings photography story…
Hurlston Hall Weddings hosts a laid-back wedding
Hi, we are Nicola and Connor and this is our Hurlston Hall wedding story.
We are both from the Lancashire town of Skelmersdale. We’ve known each other since we were in high school when we were 14 and 15. Yes! We’re childhood sweethearts!
We grew up together and have been through every major life event together. We even discovered that our parents had lived on the same street before we met, but we didn’t realise this until we started dating. It’s a small world!
A Lake District proposal
We’d been dating for eight years when Connor proposed. For my birthday, which fell on a bank holiday weekend, we went to the Lake District.
In the afternoon we went for a walk in Coniston, and Connor waited until we could see the entire Coniston Water before proposing. We were the only ones there, so it was very private and romantic.
We wanted to tell our families in person about our engagement. It was difficult to wait until we returned home the next day, but it was also nice to be in our own little bubble, as the only ones who knew.
The following morning, we rushed home with excitement to tell our families the good news. It was such a special time.
Hurlston Hall Weddings Venue
Hurlston Hall Weddings venue was the setting for our July wedding. We planned our wedding for three years and Hurlston Hall was the only venue we visited.
We instantly fell in love with the venue. We had a large wedding (100 people) and Hurlston Hall was the ideal size for us.
The amount of natural light that comes into the room – the floor to ceiling windows overlooking the golf course are amazing – this is what drew us to Hurlston Hall. The setting is modern and classy.
A large relaxed wedding at Hurlston Hall
In all honesty, we didn’t have a theme for our wedding, but the guests were our primary focus throughout the planning process.
We wanted a wedding where everyone felt at ease and enjoyed themselves. We didn’t want anything flashy or out of the ordinary; all we wanted was a relaxed atmosphere for our guests.
We hated the thought of a wedding where guests were unsure whether they could go to the bar or the restroom. So it was nice and laid-back, and Hurlston Hall Weddings provided the perfect experience.
Wedding Guests
We invited 100 people during the day and we lost count of evening invites! However, due to covid, a few of our day guests, unfortunately, couldn’t make it.
We had 3 bridesmaids – my two sisters and best friend. We had our beautiful niece as our flower girl. It’s safe to say she totally stole the show a few times!
To complete the line-up, we had 3 ushers. Connor’s brother, Kurtis, was our best man and our brothers-in-law were the other ushers. They all did a fantastic job.
What did you wear?
My beautiful wedding dress was Enzoani Blue – Milan. I got it from Liverpool Bridal Boutique. I loved the thick lace and the soft train on the dress. And as an added personal touch, I added straps to the dress and filled in the front of it to make it perfect for me.
The boy’s outfits were hired from SG Leisure in Leigh. They were amazing and even ordered in new ties to get the perfect match for us.
Lucy Mobbs did all of our hair and Sarah Gandy did our entire makeup. Both were perfect until the end of the night.
Our bridesmaid dresses were Sorella Vita ones and they were perfect. Everybody commented on how amazing Catherine, Polly and Jess looked.
Wedding Entertainment
For the entertainment, we had Alex McCoy singing in the evening, Glynn Tee – Professional DJ as our wedding DJ and Smilomatic Photobooth in the evening too.
Alex and Glynn were amazing and worked in total cohesion to make sure the dance floor was never empty. The photo booth was such a highlight of the day. Our guests had so much fun in there and we got a full digital album of all the photos captured.
We feel like we’ve got two totally different albums. The photo booth ones are so fun and show off our guests and our photos from Wes are more than we ever could have imagined.
Standout Moments
During the meal, we sat at the top table and looked over the room and just took in how lucky we are. We didn’t have to postpone our day unlike many other couples but to think what was happening was illegal 10 days before is crazy. It was lovely how normal normality felt so close to the easing of restrictions. I’ll never forget it.
Wedding Planning
Our biggest wedding planning tip would be to make sure you don’t overthink the small stuff. What you will take from your wedding is how you felt and what made you feel that way.
Most of the time, the answer will be the people you shared your day with. Don’t get so caught up in planning a wedding that you don’t enjoy. Enjoy the time leading up to the wedding – you only get to do it once.
Favourite picture?
It’s impossible to pick just one! We have a few…
The above photo is my absolute favourite picture and I don’t think that will ever change. It was taken during the first dance. I can just feel how loved and happy I felt in the moment every time I look at it.
You can’t even see our faces, but you can feel the love and connection. And I think that’s what Wes, our photographer does so well. He captures “feelings” not just photos!
Little Details
In my shoe, I had a silver sixpence dated the year my dad was born. I decided I wanted a silver sixpence with my mum’s year of birth too.
The Daisy Chain florists put the sixpence in with my flowers in such a subtle and beautiful way. In this photo, I’m showing my mum and dad what I’ve done.
Special Moments
My maid of honour and sister, Polly, was due to graduate on the day of our wedding. Due to the clash in dates, she obviously couldn’t go.
During the speeches, Catherine and I had planned to give Polly a cap and sash to mark the occasion. Polly had no idea we’d planned this and this and Wes captured the joy on her face when she found out.
Favourite Hurlston Hall Wedding Photos
This one photo is a firm favourite with everybody who has seen our wedding pictures from Hurlston Hall!
At first, most people think we lifted/threw my veil because it just looks so beautiful, they are shocked to find out it was the wind!
When I look at this photo, my eyes are first drawn to us and then to the clock.
This photo was taken about an hour after our ceremony, it was the first time we were actually alone as a Man and Wife, it was so nice to have a moment together, and to take in what we’d just done!
Wedding Photos You Will Love
Connor’s favourite photo is Esme looking at my wedding dress in the morning, she absolutely loved the day and she still wears her flower girl dress when dressing up.
We can’t wait until she is older and we can show her this photo back. I can almost hear the, “Can we go get married yet?” from her when I look at that photo. It’s priceless.

Would you recommend Wes Simpson Weddings to family and friends?
Yes, definitely. When booking a wedding photographer, we knew we wanted somebody who would capture us for who we are as a couple – we didn’t want hundreds of posed photos to remember our day by.
You can feel the love looking at our photos and I can’t wait to show them off to everybody I know!
On the day, Wes was brilliant. He just fit right in with the chilled atmosphere we wanted and was always in the right place at the right time. Nothing was too much for Wes and we almost forgot he was there at times as he just blended in.
